Yesterday Kris Moon made some excellent lasagna to accompany his laptop clinic, and it got me thinking:
IRON LAPTOP CHEF
Two contestents, 1 secret cooking ingredient, 1 secret musical sample.
For the first 30 minutes 1 contestent cooks while the other composes using the secret sample. In the next 30 minutes, they swap places. At the end everyone gets to sample the food and the music.
Clearly not so good for a big battle, but maybe fun to do at a party.
Word.

yes yes yes. we've been talking about this over on em411 forever. other ideas: each contestant gets the same samples, with one hour to compose tracks. battle ensues. tom, your idea could be expanded to any number of people by pairing off contestants. each pair gets the same sample set, but samples vary per pair. audience members submit samples which the battlers then work with. (how the hell this would work i don't know. i'm an idea guy!) team battle with multiple live switchsessions: first team (2 or 3 people) starts. After 30 min, you play the results. second team plays results, then third team, etc. with enough teams, there would always be music playing while the other teams were working on their sessions. improv battle: judges or audience members pick theme and contestants get some amount of time to create 3-minute sets according to theme. might be easier if you gave contestants a sample library to work with. blind-boy full contact laptop playoff: contestants are blindfolded and led onto stage. selected audience members dressed in chicken suits armed with softbats pummel contestants while they struggle to find their laptops and produce music by feel. winner gets to take home audience member of his/her choice, and 20 head of cattle. ok, the fourth idea was a little weak.

let's all trade loops...give it a couple months to mix the ingredients and bake, and then try and book this at 4th city mondays....anyone who wants to submit 5 loops should do so by a certain date, and then i'll work on getting a night where we can showcase the end products...we could start out the night by playing the audience the original loops and then just showcasing each persons creations through the night, maybe accompanied by a little conversation about the piece, techniques, etc. no competition, just sharing. maybe better suited to a house with some dinner and wine? or the club...? it's not a dancefloor mover or anything, but more of a chance to share ideas with others. i like this idea.

have you checked out the mixit project on em411? same basic deal. lots of fun--you get one month to work on it. i'd love to do the same thing here. would also be cool to open it up to other tools, not just laptops. (esp. since i don't have one ) as for crowd appeal, it's not as weird as it seems, i would bet.

i am really into the iron chef idea overall. i've wanted to do a dj version of this for a long time. audience members submit samples which the battlers then work with. (how the hell this would work i don't know. i'm an idea guy!) i am very into this, but it could be even done live.. my favorite live performance ever was herbert... he sampled someone rubbing a plastic cup near his mike, then remixed it.. since we're not all herberts yet, it could be done with a delay... something could be publicly sampled, then given to everyone and they could have 1/2 hour to work on it while someone else played live/dj'ed..

This is a great idea. Let me know if you need loops or when I can participate. Thanks

these ideas are amazing, let them go, take them away, push them to the top, I have very similar thoughts and dreams myself............................artform of music already exist, creations lurking 2_laptop_expansion_theory, may great events come, winners, postive energy emerge. the lights will shine on all, every battle SHOULD EVOLVE, more people contribute, AMONGST FRIENDS, CONTESTANTS, crowd(s), pushing the limits, the battles have no limit, everyone can battle, cutting edge experiments, live creations, my ideas will be virtualy anounced any day now, battles should be frequent, diverse, themes, dances, all forms, video, flash, just let it go, form a fortress, I know all of you are there, just need to lock down, operations will be air_tight and focused. This can be peaceful messenger service to the world, spreading the cause and the word. LOVE. peace unity phiberoptix. this is my boy, he is one tight artist, check his shit out, live art battles. www.thelondonpolice.com

How about just a laptop jam where everyone is put in charge of a specific aspect of the song starting with drumbeat stretching to basslines and so forth rotating until everyone has a turn at a specific position. If the positions are limited, rotate people through. I mean, why do laptop battles have to be so violent? Damn, I need a laptop.
