I thought the show went great, it was well organized and ran smoothly. All the Battlers had great performances, for me it was really hard to decide, I applauded for everyone.
The musicians where allowed to use controllers, I thought this was a good idea as each set appeared interactive and the musicians were lively pressing buttons, turning knobs and such. Each setup was attached to a board so the musicians could swap out easily, great idea!
There was a screen set up showing the Battler's logo, a back stage cam shot of them performing and a 3 minute countdown timer. Behind the stage was an artfully done video that seemed to match the music much of the time. Great job on the video work.
I wish that the video carried the output of the musician's laptop screen. As one who aspires to be a laptop musician I would had enjoyed watching how these battler's really do it.
There were 4 positions at the front stage with the master mixer in the center. The change over could have been faster changing one pair while the other pair played, instead of changing all four battlers at once.
The only other disappointment was the single elimination style tournement, this is fine for picking a winner but the true second and third place battlers could have been eliminated in a earlier round. Both Tom Chi and Nordic Soul had great performances that deserved recognition but were eliminated by the winner M.0.
In fact the judges voted for Nordic Soul over M.0 but M.0s fans were very vocal so the DJs gave the battlers another one minute set and a revote, giving M.0 the nod. I think that going second was an advantage, and that the audience forgot how great the first battler was. If the performances were recorded the audience could be reminded of the performance during the voting.
I think it would be better to have a double elimination type of tournment, at least keeping one or two of the losing battlers from each round to let them have a second chance to get back in the game.
A double elimination would have run too long as the doors opened late and the contest ended at 1:30, but with an earlier start and quicker switchovers it could have been done, something to think about for the national battle. I'm sure that every battler had 4 good arrangements ready for the evening, I would have liked to have listened to more.
Everyone put one a great show, I thought of entering but I definately would have been out in the first round. It was interesting to see that the friends of performers were clusted together, during the audience voting the cheering would come from one part of the floor. Great show, I'll put some pictures up on Flickr soon.
Thanks,
Jeff Sandys
